Chelating agents, also known as sequestrants, are essential in cleaning products for enhancing their cleaning power, as they bind metal and salt ions.
However, because they are poorly biodegradable, they can persist in the environment for a long time, accumulating in water bodies and soil, with potentially negative effects on ecosystems.
For example:
- EDTA: not readily biodegradable;
- NTA: only partially biodegradable and potentially carcinogenic.
To reduce these environmental impacts, new biodegradable sequestrants have been developed.
